Review: The Cat, the Lady and the Liar by Leann Sweeney

The Cat, the Lady and the Liar (Cats in Trouble, #3)My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A fun read, not quite as good as the second book in the Cats in Trouble series, but still better than many I’ve read!

Summary via Goodreads:

Cat quilter Jillian Hart finds a gorgeous stray cat belonging to the fabulously wealthy Ritaestelle Longworth, who believes she’s being drugged. Before Jillian can get to those charges, a body turns up in the lake-and her cat Chablis finds Ritaestelle nearby. Can Jillian’s cats aid her in solving a mystery with decades old roots?

As always I liked spending time with Jillian and her friends, and appreciated the update on her life since the previous book, The Cat, the Professor and the Poison.

This book made it within my plausibility parameters for cozy mysteries, but not by much (and I allow quite a bit of leeway for them!). Still, I really wanted to believe that the grand matriarch of a small town would take one look at Jillian, and know she was the one that could help her, and I equally wanted to believe the Jillian would take on her cause (and her cat) without any further thought; offering her spare bedroom and her sleuthing skills to solving her problems.

The characters did hit the right balance on the quirkiness scale– just odd enough to be interesting and unique, but still within those plausibility parameters I mentioned above. At least, the humans were. I love the cats in these books, but they did push one of my buttons by producing the vital clue at just the right moment

Overall, the mystery was fine, particularly by cozy standards. It primarily served as an excuse to get to know this group of characters, which works for me in a cozy. There weren’t any glaring inconsistencies, and it did keep me wondering about the motivations of several people.

I’d suggest starting this series at the first or second book if you enjoy quiet, fun, character driven cozy mysteries.

I received this book for review from the publisher. Thank you, Penguin/Obsidian Mystery!

Review: The Cat, the Professor and the Poison by Leann Sweeney

The Cat, the Professor and the Poison (Cats in Trouble Mysteries)My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

This book is very close to my ideal cozy mystery, and I almost missed out on reading it!

I’m not very good about keeping up with series that I enjoy, and I’ve been particularly out of the loop with cozy mysteries.  I was offered The Cat, the Lady and the Liar for review, and jumped on the opportunity, since I liked The Cat, the Quilt and the Corpse.  I didn’t realize it was book 3, and when I realized I had missed book 2 (this one), I almost skipped over it.  I’m very glad I didn’t.

Summary via Goodreads.com:

Between her kitty quilt-making business and her three beloved cats, Jill has her hands full. That doesn’t stop her from wanting to solve the mystery of the milk cow that’s gone missing from her friend’s farm. But imagine her surprise when a stolen cow leads to the discovery of fifty stray cats and one dead body-a victim of cold-blooded murder…

Amateur sleuth? Check. Jillian, the main character is interesting in and of herself. She’s got a good back-story, and is living a quiet life that allows here the flexibility to follow up on cats in trouble when she finds them.

Supporting characters? Check. They were great this time around. OK, Tom might be a little too perfect in his role as love interest (smart, tech savvy, tough, emotionally aware, good looking… yum!), but beyond that… I like that Jill’s link to the Police Department is her good friend Candace, lending some girl power to the sleuthing. And Kara, with her link to Jill’s past, lent a nice bit of depth to the relationships here.

Bad Guys? Yep. There were kinda-bad guys, and really-bad guys, and it was hard to tell one from the other until the end. My one real issue with this book was the attempt to, in the end, redeem a really-bad guy into the kinda-bad camp. Sorry, his actions leave him firmly where he was for me.

Mystery? Yes! Clues were left and followed up on, and the final result and the track taken to get there all made sense. It was a little lightweight, as is to be expected from a cozy, but I don’t see that as a problem.

Hook? Yes, the cats are the cute hook that gives this series that something extra that cozies usually have. There were cats everywhere, wonderful pets, brand new kittens, kitties needing rescuing. There are smart cats, but not overly so– no cats knocking books off the shelf to spell the name of the murderer.

I’m really looking forward to reading the next book, and spending more time with all these characters– particularly the cats :-) .

Review: Pushing Up Bluebonnets by Leann Sweeney

Pushing Up Bluebonnets (Yellow Rose Mystery #5) rating: 4 of 5 stars

(This is book 5 of the Yellow Rose Mystery series).

For the first 3/4ths of this book, it was probably my favorite of the series. It seemed to have a maturity beyond that of the earlier books.

When former FBI agent and now small-town police chief Cooper Boyd asks for Abby’s help indentifying a young woman who’s fighting for her life following a murder attempt, the job seems easy. But when Abby discovers this girl may be connected to a prominent Texas family, her questions about the victim’s past become stickier than pecan pie. And she’s about to learn the hard way that when she crawls out on a limb, she’d be better be certain there’s not someone behind her with a saw and a mean spirit….

I was reading along and enjoying the book. And then I got to the end. And it made no sense.

So I went back and listened to the end again.  And then part of the middle.  And decided the who-done-it did make sense after all.

My confusion is mostly my fault. When the large number of minor characters were introduced early on, some of them failed to make a significant impression. A key player (but I didn’t know it then) was in this set.

And then I spaced out at the wrong time.  That happens sometimes when real life is happening around me.

So, my fault.  At least mostly.

Anyway, I still love Abby & Jeff. I like the character continuity from the last book.

The mystery is a little less, well, fluffy than the previous books.  It was edging away from “cozy” and toward mainstream mystery.  Just a little.

It is still a good read, and I’d recommend it. Just keep track of those minor characters.

I’ve also reviewed the fourth book in the series, Shoot From the Lip by Leann Sweeney.
